Noted Grief Counselor to Share Insights on Healing After Loss

Dr. Alan Wolfelt, a noted author, educator, and grief counselor, will present two, free grief and healing workshops for community members and professionals at New Horizons Healthcare June 12 and June 13.

“Our goal is to help people embrace hope and healing and integrate grief into their life, their living and their loving,” said Dr. Wolfelt, who is director of The Center for Loss and Life Transition of Fort Collins, Colo. A past recipient of the Association for Death Education and Counseling’s Death Educator Award, Dr. Wolfelt is also a faculty member of the University of Colorado Medical School’s Department of Family Medicine.

Attendees to these programs will learn from Dr. Wolfelt’s three decades of “companioning” thousands of people in grief.

Wednesday, June 12, “Loving From the Outside In, Mourning From the Inside Out: Helping Yourself Heal When Someone Dies,” from 7-9 p.m., for the general audience.
This program acknowledges that if one didn’t love, one wouldn’t need to mourn. The content is based on Dr. Wolfelt’s book, “Loving From the Outside In, Mourning From the Inside Out.”

Thursday, June 13, “When Grief Is ‘Complicated:’ A Model to Understand, Identify and Companion Grievers,” from 9 a.m. to noon, for community care givers.
Counselors, psychologists, social workers, hospice personnel, chaplains, nurses, and other interested caregivers who desire to help people with complicated grief are encouraged to attend.

“After a significant loss, grief is normal and necessary. But sometimes a mourner’s grief becomes naturally heightened, stuck or made more complex by especially difficult circumstances surrounding the death or complications surrounding the nature of the relationship,” said Dr. Wolfelt.

All who are interested are welcome to attend either program. Registration is required, and space is limited.

“We believe that Dr. Wolfelt’s teachings will provide insights that will enhance our ability to help those in our community who are experiencing grief,” said Jennifer Oginz, a licensed professional counselor at New Horizons Healthcare and event coordinator.

Dr. Wolfelt is known throughout the United States and Canada for his educational contributions in the areas of both childhood and adult grief. In addition to Loving From the Outside In, Mourning From the Inside Out and When Grief is Complicated, some of Dr. Wolfelt’s publications include: Understanding Your Grief: Touchstones for Finding Hope and Healing Your Heart; Companioning the Grieving Child: A Soulful Guide for Caregivers; Journey Through Grief: Reflections on Healing; Healing a Spouse’s Grieving Heart; Creating Meaningful Funeral Ceremonies: A Guide for Caregivers; Healing Your Grieving Heart: 100 Practical Ideas; and When Your Pet Dies.
