This month National Childhood Obesity Month raises awareness of the risks of obesity, which starts early in life.
More than half of obese children become overweight by age 2. Children with obesity are more likely to be obese as adults. Being obese or overweight increases the risk of such chronic health conditions as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, some cancers and sleep apnea. A 10 percent weight loss in an overweight or obese child will help reduce his or her risks.
New Horizons Healthcare’s pediatric providers routinely measure their patients’ weight, height and body mass index and offer guidance to caregivers on how to manage their child’s weight. Small changes in the following key areas can help:
- Eat healthy meals and snacks.
- Eat more fruits and vegetables.
- Consume less sugar and fat.
- Make sure drinking water is available as a no-calorie alternative to sugary beverages.
- Watch portion size.
- Eat together as a family.
- Get 60 minutes of play with moderate to vigorous activity every day. Enjoy family activities like walk, bike riding or jumping rope.
- Be a role model! Eat healthy meals and snacks and get the right amount of physical activity every day.
